Framework for Aquatic Species at Risk Conservation: Protecting Species Together

Thank you for your participation and feedback through DFO’s Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program’s Wave 2 and Wave 3 engagement. We are pleased to announce that the Species at Risk Program has published the Framework for Aquatic Species at Risk Conservation.

The Framework was developed to improve the delivery of the Species at Risk Act for aquatic species at risk through the use of collaborative, multi-species approaches to conservation and recovery.

The Framework includes:

  • Principles to guide the identification and implementation of multi-species approaches

  • Criteria on when to use a single species versus multi-species approach

  • Considerations in designing a multi-species approach

  • Recommendations on the implementation of a multi-species approach

The Framework reflects input received between April 2022 and November 2023 from:

  • Indigenous peoples

  • provinces and territories

  • academic institutions

  • researchers

  • non-profits

  • industry

Thank you again for your continued interest in this multi-year engagement plan.
